Clayton Cubitt – Film Versus Digital Debate

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Fuck the darkroom right in the ass. I don’t miss those days. I have books filled with instructions and recipes for my own prints. They’re like spell books for a dead magic.

I don’t think about what camera I should use that much. I just pick up the one that looks nicest on the day — William Eggleston

Photographers speak

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Since 2004, Lens Culture has recorded audio interviews and conversations with some of
the most interesting and thought-provoking photographers around the world.

It’s great to hear these articulate artists speaking directly about their own work — and sharing their
ideas about photography in general. Enjoy!

Sebastião Salgado, the Brazilian photojournalist, has been traveling to remote, sparsely populated jungle and desert locations for his ecological work in progress “Genesis.”

“I never photograph out of hate, and I never photograph somebody I find ugly. Everyone I photograph comes out of desire. They touch me, or I find their face fascinating. And I don’t think I’ve ever taken a mean picture intentionally in my life.”

When the Work is good, you will know it – alec soth

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

An interesting post on the 2waylens blog about Alec Soth and advice for  the emerging photographer.

After college, I did five or so projects over the course of ten years. I showed my work locally in Minnesota but knew I wasn’t ready for prime time. But eventually I found my groove and did a project I was really proud of. I started winning grants and prizes. One thing led to another and the work was eventually exposed to a broader audience.

Full story here.

This ten year plus reference seems to tally with The Story of Success by  Malcolm Gladwell ( see previous post) , in which Gladwell speaks about the amount of time you need to put in to your art before you can achieve greatness.

If you take a picture of a human that does not make him noble, there is no reason to take this picture. That is my way of seeing things.
