A new phrase has been born

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I have posted before about similarities between the work of artists and photographers, such as idris khan v jason salavon and  birds of a feather, roni horn and audrey corregan.

It now seems that there is a phrase for it : subject echo. You heard it here first

This is not to be confused with the outright plagiarism of ideas or leeching as i call it, a common trait of  some of the less scrupulous photographers out there.

To see something spectacular and recognise it as a photographic possibility is not making a very big leap. But to see something ordinary, something you’d see every day, and recognise it as a photographic possibility – that is what I am interested in.

A very interesting quote to keep in mind. Maybe sacrilegious  – but I am not sure about the image in question.  But who am I to say. After all,Its in the MOMA collection.

Maurice Broomfield

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Maurice Broomfield’s photographs taken during the 1950s document a period of post war heavy industry and urban regeneration in Britain. He is recognised as one of the first industrial and architectural photographers to use his corporate commissions to make visionary photographic studies of the workers and the environments in which they worked, his motivation stemming from his curiosity in the diversity of their occupations. Employing strong lighting and form, the resulting photographs capture the drama and atmosphere of industry, whilst being fascinating historical documents and powerful social comments on the ‘pre-Thatcher’, ‘pre-Health and safety’ Britain.

If you take a picture of a human that does not make him noble, there is no reason to take this picture. That is my way of seeing things.
